Nyah Road reconstruction will start again this week, this time on the northbound lane.

Contractor Whitfield Excavations will start on the section between Stradbroke Avenue and George Street, removing the existing road pavement, reconstructing the road and then sealing it.

Council’s Director Infrastructure Svetla Petkova said businesses would remain open, and contractors and Council had worked hard to ensure access to these businesses would be available.

“Reconstructing the northbound lane will be more challenging than it was on the southbound lane. But the contractor and Council have separated the work into several stages to minimise the impact on businesses, and to give businesses and their customers access,” Ms Petkova said.

“Contractors will close about 300 metres of road at a time, ensuring people can park their cars and easily walk to businesses. There will also be a temporary pedestrian walkway from the opposite side of Nyah Road. If you are unsure about where to park or how to get access, please speak to Whitfield staff on site,” she said.

“Whitfield staff will also ensure deliveries can be made to and from businesses in affected sections.”

Work on the road between Stradbroke and George is scheduled for completion mid-February. The remainder of February will be spent working on the northbound lane between George and Chapman streets. Other sections – both in the north and south bound lanes – will be completed in March and April.

“Motorists, businesses and their customers have been very patient during the work so far, and we thank them for this,” Ms Petkova said.

“Motorists and pedestrians will need to continue taking care when moving through the area, obeying speed restrictions and any lane or footpath closures,” she said.

The $2 million, 12-month upgrade is funded through the Federal Government’s Roads to Recovery Program. It will completely upgrade Nyah Road from Stradbroke Avenue to the ambulance station, making it safer and more functional for motorists and pedestrians, and providing a more welcoming entrance to the city form the north.
